Abstract

This is a chapter-length contribution to the catalogue of a major exhibition considering the inter-relationships between surrealism and design from the 1920s to the present, both in terms of design by surrealist practitioners, and designers influenced by the movement (Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein 2019; La Caixa Foundation, Madrid 2020; Design Museum, London 2022). The chapter concentrates on the status and pursuit of design in the Paris surrealist group from the 1920s to the 1960s, with particular focus on the connections between surrealism and the everyday urban and commercial environment of Paris, as explored through surrealist journals and publications. It also examines the impact of surrealist principles on designers and artists such as Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi.
